PUL E SARIT IN ISLAM

PUL E SARIT

In a Hadith, it is stated that Pul-e-Sarit is a bridge thinner than a hair, sharper than a sword, and hotter than fire. In the Hereafter, true believers will pass over it quickly, some will find some difficulty crossing it but will eventually find relief, and others will slip and fall down in the pits of Hell.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “And there is not one of you but shall come to it, this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord. And we will deliver those who guarded (against evil), and we will leave the unjust therein on their knees.” (19:71-72) Narrated by the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny), this bridge contains seven Passes (Aqabat). There will be stations in each Pass and each station will be 70 Farsakh (1 Farsakh = 5.5 km) long, and 70,000 Angels will be posted at each Pass.

Although the term the "Bridge of Sirat" hasn't been used in the Quran, it has been mentioned in hadiths and traditions.

The Sirat is a bridge that will be set up over Hell, over which people will pass according to their deeds. Some will pass as fast as the blink of an eye, or as fast as lightning, or as fast as the wind, or as fast as swift horses. Some will cross running, some walking, some crawling, and some will be snatched and thrown into the Fire, each according to his deeds. Some will cross running, some walking, some crawling, and some will be snatched and thrown into the Fire, each according to his deeds.

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I will be the first to cross the bridge over Hell. The supplication of the Messengers on that day will be: O Allah, keep us safe! O Allah, keep us safe! There will be hooks on the sides like the thorns of al-Sa’dan, except their enormity is only known to Allah. People will be seized by them according to their deeds. Among them are those who are ruined by their deeds. Among them are those who are cut into pieces and later saved, until Allah has finished judging between His servants and He intends to take out of the Hellfire whomever He wills to take out. For whoever testified there is no God but Allah, the angels will be ordered to take them out and they will be known by their trace marks of prostration. Allah has forbidden the Hellfire from consuming any children of Adam with traces of prostration. They will be taken out after they had been burned, then dipped into a water called the water of life. They will spring forth like seeds on a streaming river.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari (6573), Sahih Muslim (182)

The person who in this world turned away from the ‘Seratal Mustaqeem’ (the path of Ahlulbait) in word and deed, and was attracted towards falsehood, on the day of Qayamat will slip over the Pul e Serit and fall into hell.

“O Lord! Save my people (ummah).” So each Prophet will take account from Their people (ummat) and walk over the Pul e Serit. No one will have any escape from walking over it. Allah says in the Qur’an And there is not one of you but shall come to it, this is an unavoidable decree of your Lord. And we will deliver those who guarded (against evil,) and we will leave the unjust therein on their knees.” (Surah al –Maryam), 19:71-72)

⏺1st Pass: Kindness, Trust, Love of Ahlulbait

The first station here is of kindness. The person who in this world is not merciful towards his parents.

“And be careful of (your duty to) Allah, by whom you demand one of another (your rights), and to the ties of relationship.” (Surah an- Nisa), (4:1)

2nd pass: Namaz

“Woe to the praying ones, who are unmindful of their prayers.” (Surah al-Ma’un: 4-5).

3rd Pass: zakat

“on the day when it shall be heated in the fire of hell, then their foreheads and their sides and their backs shall be branded with it, this is what you hoarded up for yourselves, therefore taste what you hoarded.” (Surah al - Bara’at, 9:35)

4th Pass: Fasting

The Holy Prophet (s) has also said, “For the one who fasts there are two good tidings for him, one at the time of breaking the fast (Iftaar), while the second when he shall meet his Lord. He will then pass over the pul e Serit easily and enter the presence of his Almighty.

5th Pass: pilgrimage (Hajj)

“And pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for the sake of Allah, (upon) everyone who can undertake the journey to it, and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above any need of the world.” (Surah al-Aale Imraan, 3:96)

⏺ 6th Pass: Cleanliness (Taharah)

It is achieved by first removing physical impurities (for example, urine) from the body, and then removing ritual impurity through wudu (usually) or ghusl.

⏺7th Pass: Rights (Mazalim)

“Most surely your Lord is watching.” (Surah al-Fajr, 89:14)
