About stars in Islam

The Stars

The stars are mentioned thirteen times in the Holy Quran, likened to the role of the sun as a light, due to their illuminating nature in the night sky and often associated with the moon. The stars are seen as guides.

So in the Quran, beauty has two meanings:

sensible beauty and intelligible beauty. The elements of sensible beauty are harmony, geometry, fitness, and balance, and intelligible beauty is everything of good work like Prayer, Charity...

First, a brief understanding of astrology. Astrology is very different from Astronomy and the two should not be confused. While the science of astronomy is related to the study of positions and movements of the stars and is completely permissible to study and benefit from in Islam, the science of astrology on the other hand is the study of influence of stars. It involves studying their movements to determine if anything good or evil will happen, or how being born under the influence of a particular star predicts the fate of one’s life, whether one will live a happy or sad life, and so on. A lot of things emerge when you think of astrology. All inventions and lies of the soothsayers! May Allah swt save us from falling into such errors.

Allah swt says in the Quran,

Verily! We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty). (As-Saffat 37:6)

And indeed, We have put the big stars in the heaven and We beautified it for the beholders. (Al-Hijr 15:16)

⮞It is He Who has set the stars (an-nujoom) for you, so that you may guide your course with their help through the darkness of the land and the sea. We have (indeed) explained in detail Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, Revelations, etc.) for people who know. (Al-An‘aam 6:97)

And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps, and We have made such lamps (as) missiles to drive away the Shayatin (devils), and have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire. (Al-Mulk 67:5)

Verily! We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty).

And to guard against every rebellious devil.

They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side.

Outcast and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment.

Except such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.”

Hadees

⮚Al-Bukhaari said in his Saheeh Qutaadah said: “Allaah created these stars for three purposes: to adorn the heavens, to stone the devils and as signs by which to navigate. Whoever seeks anything else in them is mistaken and does not benefit from them, and he is wasting his time and effort in seeking something of which he does not know.” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Baab fi’l-Nujoom, 2/240)

It was narrated from Aa’isha (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said:

The angels come down in the clouds and discuss matters that have been decreed in heaven, and the devils may eavesdrop and hear it, then they convey it to the soothsayers, and they tell along with it one hundred lies that they have fabricated by themselves.” (Al-Bukhaari 3210)

ISLAM emerged in Arabia where travel along the desert trade routes was largely by night, and navigation depended upon the position of the moon and stars
