1971 Men’s Hockey World Cup was the inaugural tournament of the Hockey World Cup men’s field hockey tournament. It was held from 15–24 October 1971. Pakistan defeated the host team with a 1–0 victory to lift the trophy. The 1978 Men’s Hockey World Cup was the fourth Hockey World Cup men’s field hockey tournament. It was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was won by Pakistan, who defeated the Netherlands 3–1 in the final. The host nation, Argentina finished eighth. The 1982 Men’s Hockey World Cup was the fifth installment of the Hockey World Cup men’s field hockey tournament. The event took place from 29 December 1981 to 12 January 1982 in Mumbai (Bombay), India. 12 teams competed in it and Pakistan won the tournament. The 1994 Hockey World Cup, was the eighth tournament of the Hockey World Cup men’s field hockey tournament. It was held from 23 November to 4 December 1994. Pakistan defeated the Netherlands 1–1 (4-3 on penalties) to lift the trophy.
Hockey was originally brought to Pakistan under British rule. After independence Pakistan played their first international in London when they defeated Belgium 2-1 in the 14th Olympic Games hockey tournament on 2 August 1948.
