Allah’s Loving Promise
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah Almighty says: Whoever comes with a good deed will have the reward of ten like it and even more. Whoever comes with an evil deed will be recompensed for one evil deed like it or he will be forgiven. Whoever draws close to Me by the length of a hand, I will draw close to him by the length of an arm. Whoever draws close to Me the by length of an arm, I will draw close to him by the length of a fathom. Whoever comes to Me walking, I will come to him running. Whoever meets Me with enough sins to fill the earth, not associating any partners with Me, I will meet him with as much forgiveness.” (Sahih Muslim)
This is a saying of God, quoted by the Prophet (peace be upon him). It shows how much God loves us and all we have to do is take one step toward Him, and He will come even nearer to us. It gives hope and teaches us to never despair or feel too distant from God. All it takes is one step. If you ran away from God, you could just knock on the door once and He will open it for you.

Finding Strength In Difficult Times
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: No fatigue, disease, sorrow, sadness, hurt or distress befalls a Muslim – not even the prick he receives from a thorn – except that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it. (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him) changes one’s outlook at life. It changes the psychology of a believer so they always look at the bright side of things. It also teaches that even in difficulty, there is some good in it. One may not know the good that comes out of it, but one can rest assured that it is at the very least a means for one’s sins to be forgiven. When I have a hard day, or things aren’t going my way, this saying gives me the strength to keep on going.

Trusting In Allah While Taking Action
A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, should I tie my camel and trust in Allah, or should I leave her untied and trust in Allah?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Tie her and trust in Allah.” (Tirmidhi)
This hadith, or saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him), is one of my favorites because it teaches a balance between spirituality and doing your part. Often, people think that relying on God means giving up worldly materials. Here, the Prophet, peace be upon him, is teaching people to do both; lock your car and trust in God, go to work and trust in God, take medicine and trust in God. Leaving the means and simply “trusting in God” is not Prophetic advice.

Environmental Conservation In Islam
“Once a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was performing ablution and using too much water. The Prophet said, “What is this extravagance?” The Companion responded, “Is there extravagance with water in ablution?” The Prophet said, “Yes, even if you were on the banks of a flowing river,” (Ibn Majah).
There are several teachings in Islam, that if followed, will help the environment. Among these is the teaching to abstain from wastefulness and squandering of natural resources. At the time, the Companion was puzzled by the applied benefit of this rule. Today it is evident that conservation is an important part of protecting and preserving the environment. This is one of my favorites because it shows how the Prophet (peace be upon him) was concerned with conserving natural resources 1400 years ago.

Finding True Richness
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Richness does not lie in the abundance of (worldly) goods but richness is the richness of the soul” (Sahih Muslim)
People tend to think success and happiness stem from having possessions, but the reality is that no number of possessions will satisfy a person if they are empty internally. This quote from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasizes the importance of looking for happiness internally rather than relying on external things.

Embracing Transience
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Ultimately, we will all leave this world. This world is just a temporary place that we are traveling to. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave this advice so that we can keep our eyes on the prize. This saying always grounds me in the reality that this world is fleeting and temporary.
